Are Airguns Legal in Jamaica?
Yes, but heavily regulated.
Legal in principle, but the compliance burden is high, often with firearm-grade steps for the airguns most people want.
Tier 2: Major Restrictions
Full firearms-licence regime for the airguns most enthusiasts would actually buy.

- Unauthorised possession of a firearm or ammunition (s. 45) carries at least 3 years or a J$3m minimum fine in a Parish Court, and life imprisonment on Circuit Court conviction. The 15-year minimum before parole applies to trafficking and dealing offences, and holding 20 or more rounds counts as dealing (s. 10).
The rules in detail
Classification
Unclear
Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act 2022, s. 2: 'firearm' means any barrelled weapon that discharges shot, bullet or other missile, but 'does not include an air rifle, air gun, or air pistol, of a type or calibre prescribed by the Minister.' No type or calibre is known to have been prescribed (Jamaica Observer commentary, Sept 2025), so treat air guns as firearms under the Act.
Age rule
21+
Firearm User's Permit for ages 16 to 20: the holder may possess and use a shotgun or air rifle with the permission of the Firearm User's Licence holder for that gun (2022 Act, s. 2). Nobody may transfer a firearm or ammunition to anyone under 21 unless that person holds the permit (s. 40(6)).

Visitor procedure
Air guns are not excluded from the firearm definition in practice (no prescribed types), so an unlicensed import risks an unauthorised-possession charge: at least 3 years in a Parish Court, or life on Circuit Court conviction (2022 Act, s. 45). Get Firearm Licensing Authority clearance before travel.
