The rules in detail
Classification
Unclear
UNTAET Regulation No. 2001/5 on firearms, ammunition, explosives, and other offensive weapons remains a key weapons-control baseline. It defines firearms by combustible-gas projectile discharge and separately controls firearm imitations. Licences for firearms, firearm imitations, ammunition, and explosives are granted only in exceptional circumstances.
Age rule
18+
18+ minimum to avoid prohibited-person status, but there is no ordinary consumer airgun pathway in the surfaced law.
Possession
Variable
Airguns are not cleanly defined as firearms because the firearm definition turns on combustible-material gas expansion, but realistic airguns may qualify as firearm imitations. Treat airguns as official-authorization-only for traveler and marketplace purposes.
Transfer / sale
Variable
Purchase/sale includes any transfer of ownership. Unauthorized possession, purchase, sale, import, export, production, or manufacture of firearms, firearm imitations, ammunition, or explosives is punishable under the Regulation.
Transport
Variable
Do not transport airguns or realistic replicas without written authority approval. A licensed firearm may not be carried visibly or concealed except under licence terms.
Authority
Unclear
National weapons/security framework derived from UNTAET Regulation No. 2001/5 and successor Timor-Leste police/security practice.

Import & travel
Local & import notes
Visitor procedure
Do not import an airgun into Timor-Leste without explicit police/customs authorization. Firearm imitations require exceptional licensing, and unauthorized import/export of firearm imitations is punishable by up to USD 50,000 fine or up to 10 years' imprisonment.
