Why do airgun scopes need to be airgun-rated?

Spring piston airguns produce a unique double recoil pulse: the gun jolts backward when the spring releases, then forward when the piston slams home.

Standard firearm scopes are designed only for backward recoil and can be ripped apart internally by the forward pulse, even if they survive .300 Win Mag. Airgun-rated scopes have reinforced internals (often a heavy coil spring on the erector tube) that handles both directions. PCP and CO2 guns are gentler on optics, but airgun-rated scopes are still smart insurance.
